Rhyming Poem

Beyond the Beach
by Samantha June 2004
Coalinga Middle School

Beyond the water, beyond the waves,
Past the saltwashed, polished caves
Where the land can no longer reach
Beyond the farthest sandhewn beach
Where the great families of otter n'er seem to roam
And the water is clear beyond the saltstirred foam
Where there is no lapping of gentle waves
Or the whistle of wind in darkened caves
Where there is no swishing bed of kelp
And no littered beach in need of help
That is the ocean all to me
That is the world that is our sea

Forest Poem
by Seth M.

Birds and bees
Birds and bees
Everything around you including trees

Birds and bees
Birds and bees
Everything around you including these

Birds and bees
Birds and bees
Everything is here including you

California Mussels
by Johnny, Carlos, Noel, and Jesus
April 2001

The California mussels live in the sea
The California mussels live on the rocks
The California mussels eat little plankton
They have relatives together, their names are clams
They have predators / Their names are starfish
They stick to the rocks / when the waves crash in
It's hard to survive / when you're living on a rock
They have hard shells / to protect them from the water
When people come and pull them off the rocks
It makes it harder for the mussels to survive
It's hard to break a mussel / so don't bother
We are the mussels if you mess with the best / you die like the rest
