Nature Sightings 2003-2004

6/02/2004 - As the students lay on the dock, over 100 Double-crested Cormorants suddenly landed in the water all around us. We were able to watch the birds diving and swimming underwater and surfacing with 2-5 inch fish held in their bills.

5/06/2004 - We spotted a Pocket Gopher sticking its head out of its tunnel right in the middle of the group! The students were able to lay in a circle around the gopher hole and watch it watching us for about 10 minutes. One student tapped it on the head with a blade of grass; the gopher promptly backed into its tunnel and slammed the door, so to speak, by stuffing the entrance with dirt.

5/06/2004 - Three CA Gray Whales were seen breaching repeatedly off Leffingwell Landing on Moonstone Beach. Two adults and one calf breached over a dozen times total. Students watched the show for over 10 minutes and were treated to full body displays!

4/27/2004 - A pod of CA Gray Whales traveled past Morro Rock. Students saw a mother and calf swimming 15 feet off the breakwater, travelling north. They were close enough to see the blow holes and barnacles on their skin. Four additional water spouts were seen farther out.

3/23/2004 - A Southern Sea Otter swam 3-4 feet away from the group on the boat dock in Morro Bay. It dove under the dock and students watched its trail of air bubbles as it crossed back and forth under the dock. It surfaced with a Kelp Crab, which it ate right in front of the students. There were yellow and blue ID tags on its back flippers.

2/05/2004 - Bobcat sighted next to San Simeon creek on north side of trail.

1/13/2004 - Two very clean Brush Rabbit feet and a tail were found on the trail near where the mother Bobcat had been training her cubs last week. It looked a lot like a pile of toys; Bobcat toys, that is. Who said rabbit's feet were lucky?

1/07/2004 - An adult female Bobcat with four cubs was seen at San Simeon State Park. Students observed one cub attempting to catch a Brush Rabbit to no avail. All four cubs appeared right in front of the students! Wow!

12/02/2003 - Bobcat seen at San Simeon State Park at the seasonal wetland area. Students watched it for five minutes before it ran off.

11/18/2003 - Coyote seen at beginning of San Simeon hike. The group followed her a quarter of a mile along the marsh to the footbridge. Other hikers said they'd seen her several mornings in a row on the same hilllside

11/06/2003 - Pod of Dolphins seen surfing off Moonstone Beach tidepool area
