Nature Sightings 2006-2007
1/10/2007 - Students at Morro Bay watched for over 20 minutes while a Sea Otter swam back and forth under the dock they were standing on. The otter collected and ate 10 crabs close enough the everyone could hear the crunching. Witnesses report that it sounded surprisingly like potato chips.

1/09/2007 - Buffalo's group had an exciting frog moment on the forest trail today. Without warning, a Pacific Tree Frog hopped onto the foot of a student. The frog then proceeded to make its way up his pant leg, then up his shirt, to settle finally on his shoulder. The frog settled in for a good 15 minutes before being released back to the bushes. On the same day, Cricket's group collected some Bobcat roadkill. She skinned it during recess and Buffalo dissected it at recess the next day. Turkey vultures and Raccoons made quick work of the carcass overnight.
12/06/2006 - Two of the Peregrine Falcons that live on Morro Rock were seen diving on two Red-tail Hawks that ventured into their territory. The hawks eventually got tired of all the nonsense and left.
11/27/2006 - A Great Horned Owl was seen cruising through the woods this afternoon. A little odd for daytime activity, but we figure a woodpecker might have woken her up with its pecking
10/12/2006 - Students were treated to 4 Peregrine Falcons circling and diving around Morro Rock today!
10/11/2006 - Today was a phenomenal day for marine mammal sightings. From Moonstone Beach, we saw several Bottlenose Dolphins leaping clear out of the water, a Humpback Whale or two reflected the sunlight each time they surfaced to spout, and Harbor Seals covered the rocks at our usual tidepool spot.
10/04/2006 - Students counted over 60 Harbor Seals hauled out on the rocks at our regular tidepooling spot. We rarely see more than 20, so we had to wonder what was going on... sharks in the water? storm out at sea?
