Tidepool Monitoring

|
During days with particularly low tides, students lay out grids to survey tidepool populations. Each pair of students is assigned one or two species to count, depending on their frequency. The pair is given a counter, a clipboard with a data chart, and a grease pencil to complete this task.
Population surveys are a very common technique used in biological studies. By using population count lessons, we are able to give students an excellent idea of what being a biologist might be like. Completing this lesson nicely, the data each school collects is compiled at the end of each year and turned in to the State Park Service to help track the impact of human traffic on the Moonstone tidepools.
This activity is also a great way to get students focused down into the tidepools. When they spend more than a few minutes looking into their grid, it's amazing what they see!
