Fundraising Ideas

KEEP is funded by the program fees it generates. Every visiting school is responsible for bringing one classroom teacher for every 30 students and one counselor for every eight students. Each teacher, counselor and student is charged a standard fee for attending. The fee includes 13 meals, a pre- and post curriculum binder for each classroom teacher, a field journal for each student, and a KEEP T-shirt.

Fund-raising for KEEP presents exciting opportunities. Schools have devised many successful methods for generating the necessary monies. The only limit is creativity. If your school develops a successful fund-raising strategy, let us know and we'll share it!

  1. District Participation - Districts may pay part of the cost in some cases. Most often they cover bus transportation costs. Each school district decides its own level of support.

  2. Categorical Funding - This is used in many cases, such as:
    Chapter1
    GATE
    Chapter II
    Innovative Programs
    School Improvement, Bilingual/Migrant

  3. KEEP Foundation - The Foundation has some funds for student scholarships. Contact the KEEP office for more information: (661) 871-1883.

  4. Service Clubs - Kiwanis, Rotary, etc., can be approached to help defray costs or for scholarships. A presentation of slides or video from a previous year at KEEP at one of their luncheon meetings is very motivating. A follow-up presentation is very well received.

  5. Grocery Scrip - Several chains will provide scrips that you can sell. The individual pays the regular amounts for the scrip, but a profit is built in for you. Vons, Lucky and ... ?

  6. Food Sales
    a. Bake sales - After school or after lunch (work this out with your district food service). One school raised $100 per week with this activity.

    b. Popsicles - The school gets popsicles at cost and sells them at a reasonable price.

    c. Pizza sales - students add toppings to pre-made crusts

    d. Grapefruit, Orange, or Other Citrus Sales - A healthy alternative.

  7. Penny Drive - Hardly anyone cares about pennies. Have kids collect and turn in for credit. Most banks will provide paper coin sleeves or will count them for you.

  8. Auctions - Get "stuff" donated by local merchants to sell. One school reported making $900 in two hours.

  9. Adopt-A-Class - Get a business to adopt a specific class or school to support. A bank gave one school a free savings account. That could save the set up charge and monthly fees.

  10. "Thons"! Jog-a-thons, Spell-a-thons, Math-a-thons, and many others - It gets the community involved and can raise large amounts of money.

  11. Recycling - Aluminum, paper, tin cans, etc. Some items are more profitable than others. Note the "turn in" locations and make an effort to manage collection and delivery. The KEEP Teachers Resource Guide has a listing in the Resources section describing recycling locations.

  12. School Carnivals, book fairs, swap meets, talent shows - a piece of the profit is sometimes available.

  13. Geography Bee – Parents, grandparents, neighbors, etc., pledge nickels, dimes, quarters, dollars to students for every capitol, state, province, country, etc. they get right. Incorporates learning and earning.

  14. Fashion Show – Sponsored by clothing store. Models are students, parents, teachers and administrators. Dinner served also at local hotel.

  15. Student Service auction - each student provides a service which parents and community bid for. They then contact student about when the service will be provided. The auction is held in conjunction with another school-wide activity

  16. KEEP Poster - print out a small "poster" with a picture of the KEEP naturalists, a picture of the counselors and a panoramic picture of all of the students. Students wanting an additional memory of camp can purchase the picture for a small price. (Thanks to Owens Intermediate for this idea!)
